Stay Safe Under the Aussie Sun: Understanding the UV Index
As Aussies, we all know how strong the sun can be. Whether we're out in the garden, on a road trip, or simply hanging around the house, staying sun-safe is crucial. The UV Index is something we really need to pay attention to. Here’s a practical guide on what UV protection really means—and how we can stay protected while keeping cool and comfortable, even on the hottest days.
What’s the UV Index?
Quick Tip:
The UV Index measures the sun’s ultraviolet radiation strength on any given day, ranging from 0 (low) to 11+ (extreme). In Australia, even in cooler months, we often get high or extreme UV levels, so having a sun protection routine year-round is essential.

UVA and UVB: The Two UV “Villains”
UVA Rays: The Ageing Agents
UVA rays are present all day long, all year round, and they penetrate deep into our skin. This can lead to wrinkles, dry skin, and the dreaded “leathery” look. They can also raise the risk of melanoma.
UVB Rays: The Burners
UVB rays are strongest in the middle of the day and tend to cause sunburn and surface damage, especially when they’re reflected off water or sand. They’re also linked to skin cancer.

Sunscreen & SPF: The Basics of Sun Protection
When it comes to sunscreen, it’s important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. SPF tells you how much UVB protection the sunscreen offers (e.g., SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB rays).
And remember, no sunscreen can give 100% protection, so it’s best to reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors. That includes cloudy days too!

UPF Clothing: The Secret Weapon for Sun Protection
As well as sunscreen, wearing sun-protective clothing with a UPF rating makes a huge difference. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV a fabric can block. A UPF rating of 50+ means that only 1/50th of the sun’s radiation will get through to your skin.
This is where Solbari comes in—I’ve tried a few of their pieces, and I love them for quality and comfort.
Fingerless Gloves for Driving: I wear Solbari’s fingerless gloves when I’m driving, and they’re fantastic. They keep my hands protected from UV without making me hot, and I can still grip the wheel comfortably.
Swim Leggings: These were initially for scuba diving in warm waters, but now they’re so comfortable that I end up wearing them around the house! They’re lightweight, breathable, and don’t feel hot, which is a bonus.
Wrap Cardigan and Hat: I bought a lovely wrap-style cardigan and a wide-brim hat from Solbari as a gift for my daughter’s birthday. They weren’t cheap, but they’re worth every penny. The quality is excellent, and I know she’ll get lots of wear out of them.

Why Sunscreen and UPF Clothing Are a Great Combo
Relying on sunscreen alone means having to reapply every couple of hours, which can be a hassle. With UPF clothing, you get an extra layer of protection that stays effective all day—no reapplication needed. Sun-protective clothing is also a great option for sensitive skin or if you’re outdoors for long stretches.
Solbari’s Sun-Safe Gear
If you’re looking to invest in some quality sun protection, Solbari has everything from sun shirts and gloves to swimwear and hats, all rated UPF 50+. Their fabrics are breathable, soft, and lightweight, making them comfortable even on sweltering days.
While some pieces can be a little pricey, I’ve found them worth it for the durability and protection they offer. Their swim leggings, in particular, are a new favourite—I honestly reach for them around the house because they’re so comfy.
Quick Sun-Safe Checklist
Before heading out, I always make sure I’m prepared with:
- Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- UPF Clothing (gloves, hats, swim shirts, etc.)
- Shade: Find shelter during peak UV hours, if you can
- Hat & Sunnies: A good hat and wrap-around sunglasses to protect my face and eyes

Wrapping Up
With the right protection, we can enjoy the Aussie outdoors without risking our skin.
Whether you’re popping out for a quick drive or diving into the water, taking a few steps to protect your skin can make all the difference. And for me, a few Solbari pieces have become essentials—perfect for driving, beach walks, or just relaxing in the garden at home.
